When I took a year off from NFL cheerleading, I slept in on Saturdays when my former teammates were waking up early for practice. Why? Because I could.
When I no longer had to autograph calendars, I cut my nails and let the polish chip. Why? Because I could.
When I no longer had to wear that little bitty uniform, I indulged a little more at my favorite restaurants. Why? Because I could.
When I no longer had to endure a four hour game in 90 degree heat, I gave up cardio workouts. Why? Because I could.
As cheerleaders and dancers, we were watched by hundreds if not thousands of fans. We were advised how to wear our hair and how to walk. So it’s understandable that we get burned out on diet and fitness and immediately take a break from that lifestyle. We deserve to take time to relax, enjoy our free time, eat a muffin or two… but then BOOM! Here we are 10 or 20 lbs heavier.
The fact of the matter is that everyone gains 2-3 pounds per year without making any changes to diet or fitness due to metabolism slowing down. It’s just human nature! So don’t beat yourself up! But you CAN regain that pride you had when you were on the sidelines if you make the commitment.
So in closing, I have a few questions for you. Have you said to yourself, “Why eat that cookie? Because I can…" or “Why lie on the couch instead of going for a jog? Because I can…"? I believe we need to ask ourselves, "Why hit the gym?" "Why eat healthy?" "Why take care of my body?" Because you CAN! It doesn’t matter if it’s been two months, two years or two decades since you wore the uniform, it’s never too late to re-energize your fitness and nutrition plan.
I look forward to hearing from you, what’s working for you? Where are your struggles? How can alumnicheerleaders.com help you reach your fitness goals? Feel free to email me or start a conversation in the forum section.
Cheers! - Laura
